Arizona Kayaking

The Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam is located on the border between Nevada and Arizona, 30 miles southeast of the city of Las Vegas. This world-famous concrete arch-gravity dam impounds the mighty Colorado River in the Black Canyon. More than 8 million visitors each year visit the Hoover Dam.
Hoover Dam is 726 feet tall, 660 feet wide at its base, and nearly a 1/4-mile wide at its top. The dam has enough concrete to build thousands of miles of interstate highway. The dam created Lake Mead, which is the largest reservoir in the United States. Lake is very popular for water sports.
There is much to see and do at the Hoover Dam. The dam has interesting architecture, statues, memorials, historical features, and a massive nearby power generation station. Visitors to the dam can enter the Visitor Center, which has several interesting exhibits and a 25-minute video showing the history of the dam, and take a tour of the powerplant and dam passageways.
The viewpoints from Hoover Dam are impressive and photo opportunities abound in every direction. To the south, 700 feet below the dam, lies the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. The canyon lies in the El Dorado Mountains, which in places rise 2,000 feet above the river. There are several rapids sections of this river in the canyon, which is popular for rafting and kayaking.
North of the dam, are the beautiful blue waters of Lake Mead. To the west is Nevada and to the east is Arizona. The state line is in the middle of the dam and there is a line demarcating the border between the states. Just north of the dam, there are intake towers in each state with clocks on them indicating “Nevada time” and “Arizona time”. The border is the time zone barrier between Pacific Time and Arizona Time. Boulder City, Nevada, is the nearest town, eight miles to the west.
