96 evinrude 48 spl tach issue.?
How do I fix the tach on my boat. It doesn’t register anything on it. It just stays at zero.
first, check to see if the battery is charging. should measure more volts with the motor running than with it off.
tach gets its signal from the rectifier, which also provides DC for the charging circuit. if it’s blown, you’ll need to replace it. most common causes of blown rectifier: disconnecting the battery while the motor’s running, loose or corroded battery connections, hooking up the battery bassackwards.
if the rectifier’s ok, see if you got 12V on the purple wire (IGN post) with the keyswitch in the run position. make sure the black wire (GND post) is a good ground. then see if you’re getting any AC on the gray wire (SND post) with the engine running.
if the wires check out ok, then replace the tachometer, otherwise troubleshoot the wiring harness.
