how does one get a great deal on flights to Nigeria for the summer?

One doesn’t. 
Flights to (and within) Africa are really, really expensive. It’s just a fact of life. I think it’s because so many people are so poor that only foreigners and the very rich fly, and also, there are fewer flights so you don’t benefit as much from economies of scale.
If you’re a student, you can try www.studentuniverse.com. Sometimes American Express travel has unexpected good deals, but I think you’ll have to be pretty lucky to find one to Nigeria; www.americanexpress.com and then click on the tab at the top of the page that says “travel.”
