kayak south florida
Can I go 14 miles to sea kayaking and return safely to Earth.?

I live in southern Florida, and wanted to get out of the kayak at night friends, but I do not know if is possible or even safe to travel so far, the reason I wanted to go so far Sea was watching the stars with no lights on shore bother me. I'm not a kid, I'm 33 years old and I must say that I expected much better opinion of you people …

Good Judgement is a skill far kayak possession of a pallet. Ultimately, you have to assess the risks and decide whether it is safe. That said, some things to consider: Distance: A tour of 28 miles is a long way. It is possible, but it is much more than a casual tube can easily do it. Have you done that distance before … without landing, and out of your boat? Do you know what Rate your average speed and how long it will take to do it externally? 14 miles offshore is not the place to find out that you're only good for 15 miles. Night race: It is well, but remember that other boats can not see you. Bring a white light (the law). Stay outside navigation channels as possible. Reflective tape on pallets and ships is a good idea. Navigation: Did you use a map and compass before? Have you been to the esteem which is all wind and current? GPS is great but even the "waterproof" models do not come together not good with salt water. Weather: Are you familiar with the weather in the area? Things may come unexpectedly, but it's not like the storm materializes out of nowhere. One of the most important thing is that if there is no chance * of an offshore wind (blowing ashore from the sea), will not. Commitment: When you are away, you're pretty committed. If something goes wrong, there not come up with earthly things and sorting. Are you and your friends and practiced rescue techniques? Let someone on land know what your level and when you expect to be back. Carrying a VHF radio just in case something goes wrong. There are many variables to consider, and if you have not taken a trip of this magnitude, you can start in small steps. For example, the you start with a 28-mile paddle along the coast during the day in a familiar area. This way you know you can make that distance, and if you can not an easy bail. Next doing a short night paddle near the shore and in a familiar area. practical navigation and rescue. In formal courses, if needed, to fill gaps in your skills. And you need not worry about sharks, they are the least of your worries. PS Clark's right, Chris D certainly BSing you.
